New 3.3V MIL-STD-1553 Dual Transceiver with Digitally Programmable Transmit Amplitude

Wednesday, October 29, 2014

Mission Viejo, CA (October 28, 2014) - Holt Integrated Circuits today introduced HI-1590, a new MIL-STD-1553 dual-bus transceiver with variable amplitude transmitter outputs. The output amplitude is controlled by programming an internal Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) via a Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) or using an analog control voltage input. The new device is pin-compatible with Holt’s already popular HI-1570 and is designed for use with Holt MIL-STD-1553 isolation transformers.

The HI-1590 is targeted primarily at MIL-STD-1553 bus test and analysis equipment, where the variable transmitter output facilitates receiver sensitivity testing. An SPI interface provides software control of the output amplitude, allowing greater flexibility than the more common voltage analog control pin, which is also available. Two ranges for digital control provide better resolution for low-level transmission. The device is the only digitally programmable variable output amplitude dual transceiver to operate from a 3.3V supply. The HI-1590 uses the same isolation transformer turns ratio of 1:2.5 for both direct and transformer coupled applications.

“The addition of a software controlled output voltage provides the MIL-STD-1553 test equipment community with a much needed option,” said Anthony Murray, Director of Business Development at Holt. “This additional feature is provided in the same package and footprint as existing industry standard devices with no software control.”

The HI-1590 is packaged in a compact 44-pin, 7mm x 7mm plastic QFN with an isolated exposed heat sink on the bottom, which may be soldered to the PCB power or ground plane for improved thermal dissipation. The device is available in industrial −40oC to +85oC and extended −55oC to +125oC temperature ranges.
