The integration of the HI-1567PSI MIL-STD-1553 Dual 5V Databus Transceiver on the JDAM Mission Computer provides low power consumption, smaller size, higher reliability and lower life-cycle cost for future production than previously available products.
Mission Viejo, CA (November 2, 2004) – Holt Integrated Circuits today announced that they will provide MIL-STD-1553 Monolithic CMOS 5 Volt Dual Transceivers to Lockheed Martin for integration on the Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) Mission Computer board. Lockheed Martin is the Mission Computer Subcontractor to The Boeing Company in St. Louis, MO, Prime Contractor for the JDAM Program.
JDAM is a joint Air Force and Navy program with the Air Force as the lead service. The JDAM Program incorporates new weapons technology that uses satellite-based guidance aids and powerful onboard processors to improve the accuracy of conventional munitions. A tailfin kit converts existing unguided bombs into near-precision-guided smart munitions through the use of the Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) aided by the Global Positioning System (GPS) and Inertial Navigation Systems (INS). Holt executives say they expect to provide more than 36,000 transceiver products annually to the Boeing-led team. The DoD production program is expected to continue well into the 21st century.
The HI-1567PSI Dual 5V Databus Transceiver is a robust single chip CMOS integrated circuit that will operate reliably in a wide variety of applications and environmental conditions. The HI-1567 (and its 3.3V counter part HI-1573) are being designed into a number of military avionics and stores platforms due to their potential to greatly improve board-space utilization, system reliability, and life-cycle cost.
The single-chip CMOS HI-1567PSI is housed in an ESOIC plastic SMT package that has an internal heat sink. The device’s low current consumption combined with the properties of the ESOIC package effectively eliminate the thermal management problems where designers were previously forced to take extraordinary measures to remove heat from printed circuit boards on which these components have been mounted. The 3.3V HI-1573PSI offers the same pin-out arrangement and footprint of the HI-1567PSI, allowing board designers to easily upgrade to 3.3V with a simple power supply change.
The HI-1567PSI complements Holt’s other products for MIL-STD-1553 applications, including 5V and 3.3V transceivers, Manchester encoder/decoder and interface transformers. The company will expand the product family further during 2004 with the introduction of the world’s first single chip CMOS MIL-STD-1553 Terminal IC.
